I’m Donald Bell for Cool Tools and in this video we’re going to take a look at the Hug-A-Plug. This is a humble yet handy power socket adapter for North American type outlets. A two pack of these cost me around $11 on Amazon. If you some for yourself, an Amazon link in th description helps support my videos and the Cool Tools blog.

Maybe it’s just my old house, but I feel like every outlet is in the least useful location possible. Without fail, they’re right where we want to put the couch, or the bed or a dresser.

If you want to both use the outlet, and also have some furniture up against it, you have to contend with this bulge from your cords. It’s not great on your cords or your outlets, and it’s tough to unplug things without moving furniture.

Enter the Hug a Plug! This adapter takes a single 3-prong connection and turns it into two 3-prong connections that shoot out to the side.

This simple change allows you to back furniture right up to the outlet without straining the cords and still giving you the ability to access the plugs.

Now, you could pull off a similar trick with a right angle corded power strip. I got this one by Belkin for around $11. And if you’re in a situation where an outlet is near the ground and you have a lot of things to plug in, it’s great. But it’s also $11, it’s not going to look great everywhere, and the cost of one of these and a straight plug power strip works out to the same cost.

And I’ll give you an example of where these are unexpectedly great in a way that a power strip wouldn’t be — the kitchen. Countertop outlets are great, but the cords sticking out eat up precious counter space, and can prevent you from putting an appliances right against the outlet.

With this, you can direct the cord parallel to the wall and better manage the space.

So that’s the Hug-A-Plug. You can usually get a 2-pack for around $11. They come in different colors. You can find an Amazon link for them in the video description. And remember, you can see thousands of reader recommended tools like this at Cool-Tools.org.
